Unraveling the Spaces in Between

Paris October 2023
Embark on a captivating journey and intertwine past, present and future. Geralda seeks to bridge the gap between the rich depth and nostalgia of old-world illustration and the boundless possibilities and repetitiveness of modern life and pace. By juxtaposing these seemingly opposing forces, she strives to highlight the intricate relationship between time, technology, and the human experience in the present moment.
Geralda unveils the beauty found in the slower pace of life, where the connection between humanity and nature flourishes. Each parallel stroke in her illustrations serve as a testament to patience, dedication, and the intricate relationship between our modern fast-changing landscape and the timeless allure of the natural world that continuously follows its own rhythm.
In our contemporary existence, we find ourselves immersed in parallel lives, where digital realities and physical experiences coexist, often blending seamlessly. It invites us to question the parallels between dreams and natural reality, and the profound significance of human imperfections in an era dominated by artificial intelligence.
Unraveling the spaces between
By exploring the spaces between the lines, Geralda invites viewers to question what truly happens in those moments when we disconnect from the virtual world and immerse ourselves in the richness of the present. She emphasises the need to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the natural world around us and the importance of seeking genuine connections. Her art serves as a reminder to slow down, appreciate the beauty of the present moment, and engage in meaningful interactions that transcend the boundaries of algorithms and living on solitary timelines. Emotion versus ratio.
The connections are found in the energies between the parallels. Between the lines lies a world filled with told and untold stories, dreams, thoughts and emotions. Geralda van der Es invites us to explore these enigmatic spaces, delving into the depths of our human experiences and the intricate threads that bind us together. This approach blurs the lines between past and future, allowing the two to exist harmoniously in parallel.
Foraged objects make wild tools
Geralda uses found objects such as beach charcoal, feathers, sticks, seawater and sand as tools to create – the ‘vessels’ between human, art and nature to remind the viewer of the interconnectedness of all things. We are not separate from the world around us; we are an integral part of it.
With feathers, she traces delicate lines, capturing the essence of the wind that shapes the dunes. Each stroke is guided by the whispers of the ocean. The feather, a humble artefact, becomes a symbol of the birds soaring above, their graceful flight immortalised on paper.
Sticks, worn smooth by the tides, become extensions of her fingers. She dips them into seawater and mixing it with ink to create. The water, once part of the ocean, now dances across the paper surface, creating a sense of movement and fluidity. It is as if the sea itself is painting, leaving a fixed mark on the world.
Geralda embraces natural elements as tools, and allow them to guide the creative process. Nature becomes the artist and she becomes a conduit, translating its whispers into visual form.

In shadows we dwell,
Imperfect souls, we rebel,
Embracing flaws unseen,
Imperfect beauty, serene.
